Footwear
There has always been non-leather footwear available in materials such as plastic, hemp, canvas, rubber.
However now there are many vegan and vegetarian clothing and footwear retailers. The variety of types and styles of footwear available is huge, the only problem is the cost of these products, which will put them outside the spending power of those people on low incomes. This issue needs addressing. However like most products the more that are sold and the more interest shown in them will help to lower costs and promote availability for all vegetarians and vegans in all income brackets.
One successful footwear business, vegetarian shoes, in brighton, was started in 1990 in gardner street. The founder robin webb was impressed with shoes he had seen made in africa from recycled car tyres used for the soles, and he also found a microfibre material used in yachting upholstery which looked and felt like leather and was breathable unlike plastic. After leaving art college he made his first shoes from recycled car tyre soles with canvas and inner tube uppers.
There are many other vegan retailers now which sell stylish clothing and footwear/trainers and casual clothing much like any other fashion store but they promote ethical selling with conscience.
Stella McCartney designs and sells vegetarian designer wear and fragrance which can be expensive but she has supported an animal friendly way of running her business.
Celebrity Cheryl Cole buys her footwear from Beyond Skin Boutique, a vegan shop with online products, where no animal has been harmed or used in the making of their merchandise.
