Top 10 Meat-Eating Myths

These are just a compilation of common myths regarding the eating of meat that has been used for years to support the eating of meat and to further disprove that we should not be vegetarian.

  1.  Eating meat is good for you and is safe
Eating meat is not good for you, see the Health Benefits to see the amount of damage meat is potentially doing to you. Remember, people who tell you this are just repeating what others, such as doctors or food standard agencies have told them, most of what they say is not coming from their own original thought.
  2. We were born to eat meat
This is not true! Just because we ate animals at the beginning of time does not excuse us from still eating them today. Evolution is the process that we are forever going through, it is therefore part of our evolution now, to stop eating animals and start to grow into the higher spiritual beings that we are destined to be.

  3. We cannot survive without meat
This is a myth that is based on no scientific evidence whatsoever. It is made up by ignorant people who do not care how much suffering is caused to the animals. Scientists say that a diet without meat is only lacking vitamin B12 which a very important vitamin for the body's nervous system, apart from that as long as the individual consumes a healthy diet with good protein intake form meat alternatives and a variety of health giving foods then there is no problem whatsoever, plus the individual who is converting to vegetarianism will soon recognise many health benefits.

  4. If we stopped eating meat there would be an excess of animals
Well this myth is partially true for one reason only, that is the millions of animals bred to be slaughtered is caused solely by the humans. Before human intervention there was no need for millions of animals to be killed for meat. We would only have an excess of animals because humans have bred so many extra animals for meat and so the amount of animals killed would have to slowly decline bit by bit. This is caused by humans only, natural processes are not the reason behind this myth, humans are!

  5. Animals were born on the planet to be eaten
Says who! Animals were put on the planet to co-exist with us humans and to enjoy life together. Some meat-eaters would say that this theory is too twee but that is only because their mind is caught up in today's world, millions of years ago it was simple, there was none of the problems that exist today, but because the world has changed so much it is hard for most people to even contemplate that animals are here for companionship and not food.

  6. If we did not eat meat, the methane produced from cows could dissolve the o-zone layer
This myth is easily contradicted, methane produced from cows is already responsible for a quarter of the damage to the o-zone layer, this is simply because of the sheer number of cows bred for meat. Again this is the humans fault again! All of this is causes the damage to our o-zone layer, think of how many cows are being bred compared to what nature intended, which is in the hundreds of millions, and then you will see who is responsible for the damage to our planet, HUMANS, NOT ANIMALS!

  7. Vegetarians are malnourished and need meat to stay nourished
This has come from a belief that meat is good for us, and that we need meat in our diet to stay healthy and well nourished. This is untrue and as you can see from the lifestyles of all the vegetarians and vegans in the world, it is very unhealthy to eat meat and that switching to a vegetarian diet would be a vast improvement to your health. If being a vegetarian was so bad for your health, you would not see so many vegetarians and vegans leading active lives. The opposite in fact is happening, vegetarians and vegans are living longer, thinking better and have an overall better health.

  8. You cannot build muscle without meat
This myth, I think has come from the belief that only meat contains the "right" or "proper" proteins needed to build muscle. Some people seem to think that you get testosterone from meat and that if you do not eat meat, then, as a man, you will have lower testosterone levels and will not be able to build muscle. I do not know where this myth came from but all I know is that it is false. Testosterone is produced naturally in the body and further secretion of it is produced when you work out. The only hormones you will recieve from meat are the wrong hormones that will only affect you detrimentally. There is more information here on ⇒ Muscle Building  on a vegetarian diet.

  9. You cannot live a vegetarian lifestyle on a low income
You may think that you have to be rich or well off to be a vegetarian. This is a common misconception amongst people on a low income or working-class that meat is cheap whereas vegetarian foods are expensive. It is most certainly possible to eat a vegetarian diet on a low income. See the section on  A Vegetarian Diet on a Low Income for more infromation.

  10. We have canine teeth which suggests that we are designed to eat meat
This is one of the most common myths that pops up in almost every debate on vegetarianism, that we were born with canine teeth which means that they must be for meat. There are many herbivores which also have canine teeth but do not eat meat, such as gorillas, which have very long sharp canine teeth. This shows that just because we have these teeth it does not mean that they are for eating meat. They could just as easily be used for eating hard vegetables or even for self-defense. To show this in a more visual light see Non-Human Vegetarians for a better representation of this.
